A hands-on course to lay the foundation for your career
The Certificate III in Bricklaying/Blocklaying is a practical course providing you with the training to ensure that you’ll be an asset to any employer. You will gain essential skills and knowledge in:
- levelling
- laying bricks and blocks
- general demolition
- veneer construction
- structural masonry
- arch design and construction
- fireplace construction.
Apprentices will be signed to a negotiated training plan within four weeks of Delta being received, and training will start within the following eight weeks.

At Melbourne Polytechnic, you will have the opportunity to work on full-sized projects at our Heidelberg campus, which features one of Victoria’s most technologically advanced building and construction facilities. All of our bricklaying teaching staff are industry-qualified and experienced practitioners and you will receive in-depth training, using our self-paced learning resources.
Employment outcomes
Completion of this course will enable you to find employment as a bricklayer or blocklayer on a range of building sites, domestic and commercial as a qualified tradesperson.
Work placement
Apprentices are employed by a bricklayer, which means you will are required to be training on-site with your employer, as per your contract, when not at Melbourne Polytechnic. Non-apprentices are encouraged to seek work placement when they are not at Melbourne Polytechnic.
Assessment
Assessment is delivered throughout the course using a combination of theory and practical-based tasks.

Entrance Requirements
Academic: Australian Year 12 equivalency
English: Academic IELTS 5.5 with no individual band below 5.0, Pearson PTE Academic 42 overall with no individual communicative skill below 36, or Melbourne Polytechnic recognised equivalency.

Assessment will be internal, with progressive testing.

Successful completion of this course means you can progress in your career by enrolling in the Certificate IV in Building and Construction (Building) followed by the Diploma of Building and Construction (Building).
